RPA’s work in this area covers the following areas:
Agriculture, Conservation and Land Use: Our work has addressed a wide range of subjects across agriculture, conservation and other forms of land use. These have been both policy and project based; from an assessment of legislation relating to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) at the European level to national agri-environment schemes and local land management in the Norfolk Broads and the Somerset Levels and Moors. Energy, Emissions to Air and Climate Change: Work in this area has focused on the environmental impacts of energy use, assessing the risks from emissions to air from energy generation and other industrial and commercial sources, and the impacts of climate change, both generally for decision-making, and more specifically in relation to water resources and coastal defences. Marine Environment: We have undertaken a number of projects in relation to European and UK legislation affecting the marine environment. These have considered the implications of marine spatial planning, licensing of development in the marine environment and biodiversity issues. Read more…
Sustainable Development: Many of our projects consider the sustainability of policies, projects and approaches to environmental management and legislation. We have addressed sustainability issues related to specific industries and sustainable land uses. We have also reviewed the use of ecological footprinting for policy-making. Read more…
Tourism and Recreation: Environmental and social issues are interrelated when considering the impacts of tourism and recreation. Our work has addressed the European Commission’s approach to sustainable tourism and providing access for disabled people to tourist sites and facilities across Europe. Within the UK, we have considered the improvement of recreational waters in the North West and the costs of improving access to the coast. Read more...
Waste Management: Our work has covered many aspects of waste management including design and operation of landfills and incinerators. Read more…
Water Resources: Projects undertaken within the water resources field include both surface and groundwater studies. We have undertaken considerable work on the Water Framework Directive and have developed methodologies to assist with the preparation of Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies (CAMS), identify Heavily Modified Water Bodies (HMWB) and to assess the costs of individual projects.
